I had the opportunity to participate in the postcard collection created by Universidad César Vallejo’s Fondo Editorial for FIL Lima 2023, the international book fair held in Jesús María that year around the theme “Universo Vallejo.” The project was born from an idea by artist Julio Carrasco — designer of César Vallejo’s correspondence collection — to accompany two volumes of the poet’s letters with contemporary illustrated interpretations that could bring his work closer to a younger audience, as a tribute to him. I illustrated one postcard for the collection, portraying Vallejo during his years in Paris — walking its streets instead of the traditional imagery — reflecting how the city shaped his artistic journey. The fact that he had to leave his homeland to pursue his passion is what caught my attention; so many poets cite Vallejo as a symbol of poetry, and it felt important that UCV honored his legacy and showed the magnitude of who he truly was.
